A Vivid Memory Essay Example For Students

A Vivid Memory Essay This is what I remembered:Lights. Blurred vision. Center stage. Hundreds of people in the audience with all eyes on me. The freshly waxed black stage floor, and the cameras suspended from the ceiling projecting your every move to the television, held by the judged table. I was nine years old going on ten. At that time I had been taking hip-hop, Tahitian, and Jazz dance classes for eight years already; completed in all three several times but never won first in Jazz. But I knew this was my year. I was more determined than ever. Spotlight competition was the big competition at the end of the year; everyone from my dance school WSPA and all over came to compete, including my friend Leighlani. Leighlani was like my best friend in the dance world, she was two years older but age was never a factor in our friendship. Leighlani was a Tahitian dancer. And although she only danced Tahitian she would always help me and perfect my dancing. Another perfectionist was my Jazz teacher Kelly. She was more than austere, she picked at every single smidge of a wrong move. At the time I hated her strict teaching but looking back I guess it was for the best. Due to the fact that was my last year with Kelly as my Jazz teacher I felt like I had to persevere through everything holding me back and take that win home. We were all backstage. Myself, Leighlani, Kelly, and my hip-hop teachers Patrick and Chris. Chris and Kelly were trying to get my music set up while Leighlani and Pat ran through my dances hundreds of times. Pat and Leighlani were downright and utterly frustrated with me. I couldn’t focus at all. My environment was throwing me off a bit. I was used to being surrounded with other quiet Jazz dancers who were keeping to themselves like I would be. But all around were Tahitian and hula dancers; huge feather headpieces, flowers being thrown all around, and the sound of wooden jewelry beating together. The hula category was right after me so they were all getting ready. But when it came to dance, Leighlani became a miniature Kelly and was not about to play games. Whenever she saw me get flustered or distracted she made it her duty so get me back in the game. Before I knew it, it was my 10 minute call. I wanted to take this time to really calm down and try to concentrate on myself, but of course something has to go wrong. I overhear Kelly, Pat, and Chris talking about my music. Kelly’s face was red but not of anger, more of remorse. At this point Im thinking something is very wrong with my music and there is no extra copy to use. I immediately panic. I envisioned myself of stage and my music skipping or stopping completely, and me just standing there with a blank expression on my face, then loosing once again. But here comes Leighlani to the rescue making an effort to calm me down. She comes over and asks me â€Å"Liyah, why do you look like your about to barf? Ha-ha. † â€Å"Something is wrong with my music and have no clue what’s going on. † I tell her. â€Å"Calm down okay? You got it dude. † â€Å"You got it dude† was Lani’s favorite thing to say. Even though she said it all the time I knew she actually meant it. A couple minutes later Kelly comes relieved with a cd held in her hand. By this time my ten minutes are just about over and it’s time for me to do my thang and leave it all on the stage. .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72 , .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72 .postImageUrl , .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72 , .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72:hover , .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72:visited , .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72:active { border:0!important; } .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72:active , .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72 .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud54e6dd85d8b9f18daa5ede41c461b72:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Compare And Contrast The Ways EssayMy name a mispronunciation like always, my number 1011, and the name of my dance â€Å"Did Ya Hear? † was called. I walk on stage starring into the bright flash of light in the bar back blinding me for a second. My hands are shaking, my upper lip is shiny from the sweat appearing and my chest was pounding like a hammer on a nail. At this point I couldn’t remember the first step on the dance nor how it ended. Up until the music cut on. When I heard the music my body moved for me. I was dancing. Every move stuck clean and every motion hit sharp. My final pose should not have included a smile but I couldn’t help it, it felt so good to know you did the best you could have. An hour later was awards. Although I was so confident in myself, this part always made me nervous. Sitting there on stage listening to every ones name get called, waiting for yours to come out the announcers mouth. Leighlani snuck on stage to sit with me as I waited. Our hands locked, squeezing so tight the green veins were popping out of both of our hands. The announcer is giving the â€Å"everyone is a winner speech† no one especially Leighlani, didn’t want to hear. Lani, more anxious than me was getting irritated and was making smart remarks after everything the announcer said. Lani’s comments are making me laugh which is calming me down. I release Leighlani’s hand a bit letting air flow through our intertwining fingers. I close my eyes and try to shut out everything around me and imagine the announcer calling my name. I feel an intense nudge and open my eyes and realize my name was just called. The wrinkles on my four head appeared because the look of confusion upon my face. I was so zoned out I had no clue what place I received. I look over at Lani and her eyes were watering as if she was about to cry and a proud grin was on her face. It was then I knew. I did it. I won. Looking back on that day is encouraging to me; it showed me if I really put my mind to something I could achieve my goals. Unfortunately that was my last year dancing Jazz at WSPA, but if I could I would relive it all over again. But for now I can still make time. Time for Lani’s help, time for that nervous feeling, and time for that nine year old girl being pronounced overall winner of the 8-10 solo division Jazz step dance.

Refuge (When It’s Cold Outside) free essay sample

When listening to John Legend’s first album, Get Lifted, I always get the feeling of something new and inspirational. Like some rhythm and blues singers, John Legend songs provided his experiences and observations of love, life, and relationships. However his songs give the people new meanings and interpretations on love. Although most of the songs on John Legend’s first album are all related to any aspect of love or relationships, one of my favorites is â€Å"Refuge (When It’s Cold Outside)†. The name of the song will not seem at all related to love but if you listen to it then you will understand how love changes a person. By listening to Refuge, I feel as if love is a woman who is refuge. In the first two verses, there are emotions of sadness turning in to happiness. In the first verse John Legend sings about him praying for something brighter and new. We will write a custom essay sample on Refuge (When It’s Cold Outside) or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Praying was his last hope. He prays for something better than what life is now which he describes is burdensome and where everyday is a rainy one. In the second verse everything suddenly changes as the clouds from the rain go away and an angel is sent down. The angel is a woman who clears away his troubles through love by changing him and his life. Also, the angel is the answer to his prayers for a brighter day. In the chorus John Legend compares the weather to how the woman makes him feel. In addition to the chorus there is a pre chorus. In the pre chorus he says, â€Å"You know and I know, friends come and friends go, storms rise and winds blow, but one thing I know for sure†¦Ã¢â‚¬ In the chorus and pre chorus, he compares the weather to how the angel makes him feel. The weather is a storm which is his sadness but now with his angel he feels peace and warmth while it is still cold outside. The angel brings him refuge from the storm by giving him her love, which is his warmth. Her love is what keeps him going and what makes everything alright for the both of them. John Legend believes the woman is what changed and distracts him from the outside world. Like the third verse, he describes how she makes him see visions of other places. In the final verse, John Legend sings of how hard the world is. He says â€Å"†¦peace is so hard to find, we’re terrorized and victimized, but that’s when I close my eyes, and think of you to ease my mind†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Peace is hard to find because of the wars that are happening but his life is changing. Now in his life he feels better about himself but he still thinks about the burdens of life. Additionally, John Legend closes his eyes to dream of her to relax and ease his mind so she can take him to another place that is peaceful and away from the wars where there is love and grace. In the beginning, he didn’t have a faith but now it is restored because of her and what she has done. His faith was gone because of how sad he was before he prayed. All he could do was pray and after his woman came down he no longer worries about the wars anymore. Also, John Legend felt like he was at peace with himself and the world now. Therefore, in the song â€Å"Refuge (When It’s Cold Outside)† the woman that John Legend believes changed his life is his refuge from the world through love. She gives him what he needs which are peace, warmth, love, and faith. He needed peace from this world instead of heartbreak. He needed warmth and love to bring him hope for something better and to keep him from going into the storm, which is really the burdens of life today. John Legend dreams of her to ease his mind off the pain from the world today. Throughout the whole song it all goes back to love. Not only is the angel he has received through his prayers is his answer but she gives me him her love and brightened his life from the storm and clouds.

Albert Einstien Essays (1644 words) - Albert Einstein, Free Essays

Albert Einstien Essays (1644 words) - Albert Einstein, Free Essays Albert Einstien Of all the scientists to emerge from the twentieth centuries there is one whose name is known by almost all living people. While most of these do not understand this mans work, everyone knows that its impact on the world of science is astonishing. Yes, many have heard of Albert Einsteins General Theory of Relativity, but few know about the intriguing life that led this scientist to discover what some have called, The greatest single achievement of human thought. Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany on March 14, 1879. Before his first birthday, his family had moved to Munich where Alberts father, Hermann Einstein, and uncle set up a small electro-chemical business. He was fortunate to have an excellent family with which he held a strong relationship. Alberts mother, Pauline Einstein, had an intense passion for music and literature, and it was she that first introduced her son to the violin in which he found much joy and relaxation. Also, he was very close with his younger sister, Maja, a nd they could often be found in the lakes that were scattered about the countryside near Munich. As a child, Einsteins sense of curiosity had already begun to stir. A favorite toy if his was his fathers compass and he often marveled at his uncles explanations of algebra. Although young Albert was intrigued by certain mysteries of science, he was considered a slow learner. His failure to become fluent in German until the age of nine even led some teachers to believe he was disabled. Einsteins post-basic education began at the Luitpold Gymnasium when he was ten. It was here that he first encountered the German spirit through the schools strict disciplinary policy. His disapproval of this method of teaching led to his reputation as a rebel. It was probably these differences that caused Einstein to search for knowledge at home. He began not with science, but with religion. He avidly studied the Bible seeking truth, but this religious fervor soon died down when he discovered the intrigue of science and math. To him, these seemed much more realistic than ancient stories. With this new knowledge he disliked class even more, and was eventually expelled from Luitpold Gymnasium, being considered a disruptive influence. Feeling that he could no longer deal with the German mentality, Einstein moved to Switzerland where he continued his education. At sixteen he attempted to enroll at the Federal Institute of Technology, but failed the entrance exam. This forced him to study locally for one year until he finally passed the schools evaluation. The Institute allowed Einstein to meet many other students that shared his curiosity, and it was here that his studies turned mainly to Physics. He quickly learned that while physicists had generally agreed on major principles in the past, there were modern scientists who were attempting to disprove outdated theories. Since most of Einsteins teachers ignored these new ideas, he was again forced to explore on his own. In 1900 he graduat ed from the Institute and then achieved citizenship to Switzerland. Einstein became a clerk at the Swiss Patent Office in 1902. This job had little to do with physics, but he was able to satiate his curiosity by figuring out how new inventions worked. The most important part of Einsteins occupation was that it allowed him enough time to pursue his own line of research. As his ideas began to develop, he published them in specialist journals. Though he was still unknown to the scientific world, he began to attract a large circle of friends and admirers. A group of students that he tutored quickly transformed into a social club that shared a love of nature, music, and of course, science. In 1903, he married Mileva Maric, a mathematician friend. In 1905, Einstein published five separate papers in a journal, the Annals of Physics. The first was immediately acknowledged, and the University of Zurich awarded Einstein an additional degree. The other papers helped to develop modern physics a nd earned him the reputation of an artist. Many scientists have said that Einsteins work contained an imaginative spirit that was seen in most poetry. His work at this time dealt with molecules, and how their motion

The Next Big Thing essays

The Next Big Thing essays All through time scholars and fortune tellers have tried to predict the next big thing to hit, whether it is general or a specific, they have tried. No one knows when it will hit until it does, like Flemings serendipitous discovery of the antibiotic penicillin. At this, the dawning of a new millennium, we should recall that little more than a hundred years ago it was a popular opinion that nothing of any great importance was left to be done, and then radioactivity, quantum mechanics, antimatter, and various vaccinations came along. Todays science is an open forum for all. Serendipity contains a collage of significant scientific discoveries in the fields of physics, biology, chemistry, astronomy, medicine, and even archaeology. My hope is that the next big thing is the advancement of immunology. According to National Geographic Magazine, the health of the body is dependent on the immune systems ability to recognize and then repel or destroy foreign invaders that may cause disease. Ev ery minute of every day wars rage within our bodies. Usually we never even notice the battles in the incessant wars within us. We have evolved legions of defenders, specialized cells that silently rout the unseen enemy. Sometimes these warriors mistake harmless invaders, such as pollen, for deadly foes, and they mount an allergic reaction. Sometimes our defenders are caught unprepared, and we develop a cold, the flu, or worse. Occasionally some of our own cells begin the mutinous proliferation of cancer and manage to evade the surveillance of our body's defense forces. But for every successful penetration of our defenses, thousands of attempts are repelled. We sleep securely, trusting the invisible vigilantes of our immune system. For decades immunology-the study of the immune system-was a backwater of medicine. In reality we did not have the instruments to explore the battlefields within us. In the past 20 years, however, powerful micros...

Unit 3 Discussion Big Ideas in Science Research Paper

Unit 3 Discussion Big Ideas in Science - Research Paper Example So the sooner one reveals a theory the more time it gives to the world to explore it. 2. Skepticism can be faced by presenting facts and reasoning understood by the scientist. It would be ideal to detail the process of the whole theory the idea behind it and the reason why it occurred. Any theory needs to have a solid scientific reasoning to be approved. According to (Oskin,2013) â€Å"Wegeners theory of continental drift was soundly denounced by geologists. Part of the opposition was because Wegener didnt have a good model to explain how the continents moved back and forth†.It is necessary for the theorist to prove that the previous theory was wrong and reason for it. The scientific detailing of a theory can avoid the scientist being labeled a crack pot. 3. The best way to explain the continental drift is by analyzing the plate tectonics with GPS. GPS is Global Positioning System which works with the help of satellite devices. According to (Garmin ,1996) â€Å"The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense†. It shows that the earth’s plates are floating on the surface and it makes it clear that they are moving all the time. Event the devices that project 3D image of seismic activity is important for supporting Wegner’s theory. One of the evidence which can be shows is the presence of Negroid races in many parts of continents. It can be seen that there is Negroid races in India and other Asian countries and even the topography and vegetation is somewhat similar. The wild life and aquatic animals remain somewhat similar and this can be because the animals shared a common ancestor and had few changes due to evolution. The evidence can be collected by visiting some parts of continents and showcasing its inhabitants and geographical nature. Patrick is quiet right that Wegner has not revealed the theory too soon

Hip Hop & Crisis in African American Commnity Research Paper

Hip Hop & Crisis in African American Commnity - Research Paper Example Its story is at once imbedded in time/history, geography, culture, technology, industry, politics, and aesthetic frames. In its short history from the mid 1970s to present, numerous critical, socio-cultural, and empirical studies have sought to dissect and explain away its reality. However, this paper attempts to review the literature through historical perspectives. Body Hip-hop was born out of a number of social, political, and artistic occurrences. George (1998) starts hip-hop's story at the end of the 1960s, a period of hopes for total racial integration-Martin Luther King's dream. However, as the 1970s progressed, the reality of inequalities was reiterated. In terms of what was reflected in art, the expression of the people, most obvious and mobile with the music, segregation continued. Rock and roll was predominantly for White artists and audiences, whereas rhythm and blues was African-American (Kitwana, 2006). In the 1970s, profits from the rock music revolution helped to crea te, develop, and further consolidate a corporate musical industry that was evidenced by mergers such as Warner-Reprise, Elektra-Asylum, and Atlantic. These corporations recognized the potential profits available from the Black performers who could access not only the Black community, but also "cross-over" to White teens. The major record labels created "Black music" divisions, encouraging commercial-cultural crossover. This potential for broad audience access is one reason that "disco" came into being in the 1970s. As with many popular music forms of the era, it had African  American roots. Scholars and those in the musical recording industry have consistently argued about the influential nature of Black culture and music, and evidence exists to support its apparent relationship to White, or mainstream music and culture. Garofalo (1993) posits the links between genres, and notes that the history of popular music in America "can be described in terms of Black innovation and popula rization" (p. 57). Disco was an example, coming as it did at the end of the civil rights/Black power era, it was at once an accumulation of African-American and American popular music experience. The musical genre was short for discotheque, a place where people could go to dance, drink, and listen to this form of music. George (1998) and Werner (1999) note the rise of disco from the underground clubs of New York and Los Angeles, during the mid to late 1970s, that paved the way for initial elements of break dancing and future samples for rap. Werner (1999) notes disco's musical roots in Black dance music (p. 205). Disco was at first "high-quality Black dance music, with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huffs elegantly funky Philly Sound productions and the lush sounds surrounding Barry White's bass voice the artistic benchmarks" (George, 1998, p. 7). Whereas the club provided the place and the music industry provided the means for increased musical crossing over, the advent of synthesizer allow ed for the ability to manipulate prerecorded sound for smoother transitions between songs. This inaugurated the cult of the club OJ who did the "mixing." As disco became mainstream around 1975, it lost much of its freshness and was further stigmatized by an association with the gay rights movement (Werner, 1999, p. 205). To chants of "Disco sucks!"
